How Is The Voting Going So Far in Sussex County?

Today our Sussex County volunteers attended the Sussex Department of Elections (DOE) first Preparation and Scanning of Early Voting Ballots for the Primary Election at Sussex DOE office in Georgetown. After the first day of Early Voting yesterday, the Electronic Voting Machine canisters that contained the paper Activation Cards, which record the electronic vote as a paper copy, were brought to the DOE. These Activation Cards were scanned in through the DS450 by Deputy Director Tracey Wilkerson, with DOE staff, one Republican and one democrat, observers. Our observers were there as well. Overall this event went smoothly, only one Activation Card could not be read, as the ink on the card was not dark enough. A copy Activation Card was created by DOE staff and run through. The votes will not be be counted, just scanned in, and then securely stored away. The votes will be counted on the Primary Election Day, 9/10.

This process of scanning of the Early Voting Ballots will take place daily, after each day of Early Voting. It occurs at 10am at the Georgetown Department of Elections. If you plan to attend one of these dates, please let me know, email info@38thdrcp.com.

So how is the vote going so far in Sussex County?

Absentee voting will continue until Primary Election Day, 9/10/24, and we will be tracking both Absentee Voting and Early Voting. Democrats in Delaware have been known to have higher amounts of voting by mail and absentee voting compared to Republicans. We no longer have mail in voting, but in many ways, absentee voting can seem a lot like mail in voting. And true to form, democrat absentee voting is still far outpacing Republican absentee voting in the state and in Sussex County. But how did Republicans do in the Early Voting? True to form, more Republicans than democrats are coming out to Early Voting, except in three locations: RD 4 - Long neck, RD 14 - Rehoboth, and RD 20 - Lewes. In these voting locations, many more democrats are coming out for Early Voting compared to Republicans.

So after we combine the votes for Absentee Voting and Early Voting in Sussex County, this is how we compare:

Republican Absentee Votes 829

Republican Early Voting 722

Republicans Total Votes 1,551

Democrat Absentee Votes 2,279

Democrat Early Voting 866

Democrats Total Votes 3,145

Before you get too discouraged looking at these numbers, this Primary Election is of much greater interest in the Democrat Party. They have a very heated three way primary for Governor, between Bethany Hall-Long, Matt Meyer and Collin O'Mara. The competition between Bethany Hall-Long and Matt Meyer has been intense and may be the cause of a large GOTV effort on the democrat side.

The Republican Party also has a three way primary for Governor with Mike Ramone, Jerry Price, and Bobbie Williamson, but campaigning has not been fierce by any candidate thus far, with many of our constituents not knowing that there is a three primary for Governor. The other Republican primary is between Donyale Hall and John Whalen, for US Congress.

Despite the above and a possible explanation for this heavy democrat turnout (even in the 38th district democrat voters are outpacing republican voters) I am still discouraged. Therefore, we will be turning to making good old fashioned phone calls. If you can help make some phone calls and getting out the Republican vote, email our Vice RDC Rick here - he will provide you with a list, phone numbers, and a script.

Also, for our volunteers, we will have a Zoom call most Tuesdays at 630pm, email here if you would like to attend info@38thdrcp.com.
