The Special Election Has Begun! How Are We Doing??

Writer: Michelle ParsonsMichelle Parsons

The first thing I will say, is that with this very, very low voter turnout so far, if only 50% of registered Republican voters come out to vote, Republicans CAN win in these two elections!

The Special Elections for Senate District 1 and Senate District 5 are currently in progress, with Early Voting commencing on February 4th. As of the end of the day on February 5th, 20025, below is the breakdown of Republican versus Democrat voters in these elections. In these two districts, the "Other" vote is probably split 50/50 at best, but it is more likely leaning towards Democrats. I don't have the voter turnout percentage yet, but it is currently very, very low.

What Are The Voting Results So Far?

In these two Democrat-leaning Senate districts, Democrat voter turnout is higher than Republican turnout, as anticipated. However, SD 5 shows a significantly higher percentage of Republican voter turnout compared to SD 1. Additionally, SD 1 has a much larger number of Democrat versus Republican permanent absentee voters compared to SD 5. Flipping Senate District 1 from Democrat to Republican will be more challenging, as Democrats have long prepared by registering a substantial number of permanent absentee voters who automatically receive ballots without needing to request them. There is one hope: with limited voter awareness of this special election, there is a possibility that Democrat absentee voters might discard the mailed ballots and not return them.

In nearly every election in Delaware, Democrats typically exceed Republicans in absentee voting, while Republicans often outperform Democrats in in-person and early voting. Consequently, our SD5 candidate, Brent Burdge, is still competitive, and SD 5 can still be won, with 27% of Republican votes cast in SD5 compared to just 19% in SD1.

In my view, although this is not an official recommendation from the DE GOP or the campaigns, I propose that we concentrate more of our Republican efforts on SD5. We should send texts to SD5 voters using the DE GOP app for those who have it installed. Once all SD5 voters have been contacted through the app, we can then proceed to text voters in SD1. Again, my opinion only.

The DE GOP app is operational for those who have already downloaded it, so please use it daily to send text messages to SD5 voters, and SD1 voters.
