We have now had two busy days of early voting in Delaware. There is tons of excitement in the air, and we are seeing lots of voters come out earlier than every before. It would seem that finally, elections matter! Well, how MUCH do they matter to Delawareans and to which party do they matter more? I am not going to break this down into Absentee vs Early voting, but rather I will review the total combined votes that we have so far, and this total tally is after the FIRST day of Early Voting, so this report excludes Saturday early voting, as we do not have that data yet.
Of the 55,760 total votes that have come in so far, this is the breakdown:
Even though we have seen long lines up and down the state on the first day of early voting, this is still a small percentage of the total registered voters that have come out to vote so far, only 8% voter turn out for both parties, with only a slightly higher voter turnout of 8.6% of total registered Republicans that have voted so far. And as you can see below, the total democrat votes outnumber the total Republican votes. If ALL "other" parties voted Republican, then we would have a 49/51 split, democrats favor.
But something entirely different happened in the 38th District. In the 38 District, voter turnout so far is a whopping 21% for BOTH parties! With a higher amount of registered Republicans in the 38th, this clearly puts Republicans in the lead in the 38th. Question, did the overt GOTV advertising of billboards and newspaper ads activate just as many democrats as it did Republicans to come out to vote, percentage wise? When you are the leading party, this is a solid tactic and clearly works in the 38th with 48% Republican votes vs 33% democrat votes cast. When you are the lagging party, however, you never want to activate the opposition through overt campaigning. In this case, more targeted and covert GOTV methods are preferred, such as direct mailers, direct texting, canvassing and phone banking. In Sussex County overall, there is a small Republican lead over democrats, 42% Republicans vs 40% democrat voters.
My Suggestion
These voter turnout numbers need to be analyzed RD by RD, especially in our vital races, such as the 4th Rep. Jeff Hilovsky, 20th Nikki Miller, Kim Hoey Stevenson Senate District 6, and 14th Mike Simpler races, and adjustments made ASAP on how to target our Republican base to come out to vote. I recommend continued direct texting and phone banking with continued neighborhood canvassing by candidates. Continue to target Republicans more than any other group. Let's see what the next few days' results bring!!
