Why One-Party Rule is bad for Delaware and Sussex County
By
Rick Radatovich, Frankford
Following Delaware’s first statewide property reassessment in decades, the Delaware
General Assembly convened a special session to address resident concerns. Several
bills were passed, offering temporary measures to mitigate the impact.
However Republican lawmakers, argue that Democratic leadership rushed the process without committee hearings, public comment, or sufficient scrutiny, while rejecting a bill that
could have provided more substantial relief (HB 245).
The importance of committee hearings and public comments cannot be understated. They bring transparency to the process along with recommendations and a vetting process to help improve the quality of any bills brought to the floor for a vote. It helps to hold our legislators (Democrat and Republican) accountable. This is the voice of the people, for which the current Democrat controlled legislature has muted. This is not what our constitutional republic was built on.
Particularly concerning is Senate Bills 203 and 204 which clarify and codify the authority
of counties and municipalities to set different property tax rates for residential and non-
residential properties, provided classifications are reasonable and rates consistent.
These bills allow for splitting tax rates, potentially doubling rates for non-residential
properties like small businesses, farms, hospitals, and rental housing complexes. This
would raise prices for goods and services, reduce job opportunities, and increase costs
for renters.
It is important to realize that businesses don’t pay taxes, it’s the consumers
who patronize these businesses who do. Business owners will pass along these tax
increases in the form of higher costs of goods and services consumed by the public at
large. Putting undue burden on residents.
As mentioned above House Bill 245, proposed by Republican Representative Michael
Smith, was not considered despite earlier committee review. HB 245 would have
prohibited school districts from raising property taxes by more than 10% unless they
could justify the increase due to financial loss from reassessment. This would prevent
automatic tax hikes every five years under the new process. This common-sense
practical bill would create more accountability and transparency in our school taxation
process. It was never considered by the Democrat controlled legislature.
It is clear from the recent happenings in Legislative Hall that our Democrat colleagues
want to forgo the will of the people and wield power for their own benefit. One-party rule
is bad for Delaware and the recent events in Legislative Hall have highlighted this issue.
If you are dismayed by the recent happenings, call your legislators, or better yet, get
involved with your local Republican club.
Thank you, Rick!!
