This Isn’t Just Snow: Delaware State Preparation and What Residents Need to Know Before the Weekend Storm

A significant winter storm is approaching Delaware this weekend, and emergency officials are warning it could be the most impactful system the state has seen in nearly ten years.

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service are closely monitoring the storm’s track, with particular concern about the ice line, widespread power outages, and major transportation disruptions.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect statewide from Saturday evening through Monday afternoon. Current forecasts indicate snow may change to sleet or freezing rain—especially Sunday afternoon and evening—before turning back to snow. Residents should plan for approximately a foot of snow, though totals could be higher or lower depending on how much mixing occurs. Ice remains the biggest concern, as it can bring down power lines, block roads, and significantly slow emergency response.

Now is the time to prepare. Households should have flashlights with fresh batteries, candles, and easy-to-prepare food that does not require electricity. Fully charge phones and external battery packs ahead of time. Those with gas ranges or backup propane heat will be better positioned if power outages last for an extended period. Anyone who relies on medical equipment or refrigerated medications should plan accordingly, and neighbors should check in on elderly residents or those who may need assistance.

Residents are urged not to rush out to shovel early. With sleet or freezing rain likely to follow initial snowfall, early shoveling may be unnecessary and could increase the risk of injury. Cold temperatures and heavy, wet snow place added strain on the heart. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue while shoveling, stop immediately and rest. If chest pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, call 911. Waiting until conditions stabilize—and pacing yourself when you do shovel—is often the safest approach.

Travel should be limited once the storm begins. Ice will make road conditions especially dangerous, and officials are anticipating major transportation issues. Emergency operations centers across the state are moving into enhanced monitoring, with partial or full activations expected by Sunday. Crews are being staged, shelters are being planned in coordination with schools and nonprofits, and essential personnel are being pre-positioned.

The Delaware State Police are mobilizing four-wheel-drive vehicles, and the Delaware National Guard is on standby if activated for public safety response. State agencies are also coordinating with hospitals, long-term care facilities, dialysis providers, and emergency shelters to ensure continuity of care during the storm.

This is a storm to take seriously—but calm, early preparation makes all the difference. Use the next 24–48 hours to get ready, stay informed, and look out for one another. The 38th will continue to share updates as conditions develop.

Save the Date

Monday, February 2nd - the next 38th District and Southern Delaware Republican Club meeting. Meet and greet begins at 6:00 p.m., with the meeting starting at 6:30 p.m., at the South Coastal Library on Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.

Our guest speaker will be U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Michael Katz, MD, who previously ran as an Independent for the same seat in 2024. With the current political climate marked by chaos, violence, and rampant fraud, and against the backdrop of the current administration’s policies, it raises an important question: are Independent voters moving toward more conservative values? Will Independents turn out in the upcoming midterm election, and if so, how will they vote? Come hear directly from Dr. Katz himself about his perspective and what is now his Republican platform.
