Delaware Bill Threatens Sussex County’s Zoning Authority—Public Hearing This Monday!
Please read below this important message from Dave Stevenson from the Caesar Rodney Institute, the only conservative think tank organization in Delaware, fighting to educate and inform Delaware residents. Your help is needed to email public comments!
Dear Sussex County Residents,
What’s at stake:
Home Rule and Zoning Rights: Zoning authority in Delaware has long rested with county and municipal governments. SB 159 is a targeted attempt to reverse a legal decision Sussex County already made—setting a dangerous precedent.
Judicial Overreach: US Wind has already appealed the denial to Delaware Superior Court. This bill would short-circuit that legal process.
No Local Benefit: Sussex County determined the project would burden local taxpayers without delivering benefits. Local governments in Maryland (where this project is based) also rejected US Wind’s proposals—including their “onshoring” cable plans. While Maryland ratified the offshore project itself, they declined to bear the local impacts. So why is Delaware being asked to accommodate them?
This is not about offshore wind in general. It’s about preserving Sussex County’s right to determine what gets built in its communities.
Want to understand why Sussex County said no? Read my article from December 2024: Sussex County Council Stops Offshore Wind Cables
Sincerely,
David T. Stevenson

How to Take Action:
Please submit any written remarks on the legislative agenda items to the Environment, Energy, and Transportation Committee’s email address at SenateEnvironmentEnergyTransportation@delaware.gov to ensure that they are distributed to committee members and preserved for the record.
Attend the hearing (in person or via Zoom):
Monday, June 3 at 1:00 p.m.
Contact Senator Stephanie Hansen who is the bill's prime sponsor and main driving force. She does react to massive negative input so I would focus on her. Stephanie.Hansen@delaware.gov.
Contact your state legislators and urge them to vote NO on SB 159 (Find my legislator).
Thank Sussex County Council for protecting local zoning decisions—and urge continued resistance to state overreach.
