Your Voice Needed: Fairness in Girls’ Sports Hearing, Jan. 28

A key piece of legislation affecting school athletics in Delaware will be heard this week, and public input matters.

The Senate Education Committee will meet on Wednesday, January 28 at 1:00 p.m. in the Senate Hearing Room to consider several bills, including SB 215, the Fairness in Girls’ Sports Act, sponsored by Bryant Richardson.

SB 215 addresses how athletic teams are designated in Delaware schools. Under the bill, student athletes would compete on teams associated with their biological sex, as determined at or near birth and documented by a birth certificate or other government record when a birth certificate is unavailable. The legislation includes an exception allowing female athletes to compete in male sports when a corresponding female team is not offered. School districts, charter schools, and DIAA member schools would be required to designate athletic teams based on biological sex to implement the Act.

This committee hearing is an opportunity for Delawareans to weigh in directly. Anyone wishing to testify must register in advance through legis.delaware.gov in order to offer public comment, either in person or online.

If you know parents, students, coaches, or others who may want to testify or submit comments, please help spread the word. Those interested in testifying are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible.

For questions or coordination related to testimony, Senator Richardson can be contacted directly at brichardson@mspublications.com .

Public engagement is a critical part of the legislative process. If this issue matters to you, now is the time to make your voice heard.

Save the Date

Monday, February 2nd - the next 38th District and Southern Delaware Republican Club meeting. Meet and greet begins at 6:00 p.m., with the meeting starting at 6:30 p.m., at the South Coastal Library on Kent Avenue in Bethany Beach.

Our guest speaker will be U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Michael Katz, MD, who previously ran as an Independent for the same seat in 2024. With the current political climate marked by chaos, violence, and rampant fraud, and against the backdrop of the current administration’s policies, it raises an important question: are Independent voters moving toward more conservative values? Will Independents turn out in the upcoming midterm election, and if so, how will they vote? Come hear directly from Dr. Katz himself about his perspective and what is now his Republican platform.
