ICE Protests Now in our Sussex County Schools - Instigated by Adults?

First: A Recap of our February 38th District Republican Club Meeting

The 38th District Republican Club held a well-attended and substantive meeting this month, featuring remarks from Dr. Michael Katz and Alexandra Reed Baker, with a focus on both national accountability and effective local governance.

Dr. Katz, a candidate for U.S. Senate, spoke about his decision to affiliate with the Republican Party after previously running as an Independent. Drawing on his background as a physician, he emphasized evidence-based decision-making, fiscal responsibility, and constitutional limits on federal power. His remarks resonated with many in attendance who are increasingly concerned about federal overreach and the erosion of trust in national institutions.

Alexandra Reed Baker provided an informative and engaging overview of her work as Sussex County Recorder of Deeds. She highlighted operational reforms within her office, including the elimination of redundant positions and the creation of a new paramedical role to better support county operations and public service needs.

She also shared a fascinating history of the Recorder of Deeds office, noting that property records in Sussex County date back to the early 1800s, underscoring the importance of accuracy, transparency, and institutional continuity.

One particularly interesting example of the office’s role in safeguarding election integrity involved Senator Gerald Hocker, who was unusually required to confirm his residency within the district by producing the original deed to his property. This was the first time many attendees had heard of such a requirement, including Senator Hocker!

FEATURED ARTICLE:

When National Politics Reach Local Schools

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a quiet but concerning shift in how national political issues are filtering down into our local schools and communities. A small student walkout occurred at Cape Henlopen High School last week, and a Rehoboth Beach church, Epworth United Methodist Church, recently hosted an anti-ICE program during its Sunday services. Now, similar rhetoric and organizing energy appear to be surfacing closer to home within the Indian River School District. You can watch a portion of the Epworth program here.

Protest vs. Escalation

Peaceful protest has always had a place in American civic life. What’s new, and troubling, is how quickly heated adult political language is bleeding into spaces occupied by children, amplified by social media. Schools across the country are now grappling with threats and disruptions tied not to local grievances, but to national political movements that students barely understand yet feel intensely. This becomes especially concerning when education organizations, including the Delaware teachers' union, Delaware State Education Association, elevate ICE as a priority issue within schools, despite it having no direct relevance to classroom learning or student safety.

Understanding ICE and the Rule of Law

It’s worth pausing to remember that ICE is not a new or rogue institution. It has existed for decades, operates under federal law, and is part of a government system built on due process and rule of law. Disagreement with policy is legitimate. Teaching children that institutions themselves are enemies, or that disruption during school hours is a substitute for civic engagement, is not.

A Line Responsible Adults Must Draw

Independent thinkers should be asking a simple but urgent question: why are democrat political agendas now spilling into our schools? When far-left anti-ICE activism moves from protest spaces into classrooms and student life, the people most affected are not policymakers — they are children. Schools are not the place for ideological escalation, and students should never be used as vehicles for adult political grievances. It is time for Democratic leaders, unions, and activists to reassert boundaries, de-escalate the rhetoric, and put students first. Civic engagement requires restraint as much as passion, and protecting our schools is where responsible adults draw the line.

When far-left anti-ICE activism bleeds into our schools, it’s not civic engagement — it’s adults failing to protect children from political escalation.

Looking Ahead: Next Meeting Speaker

The 38th District Southern Delaware Republican Club meets on the first Monday of each month. Our next meeting will be held on Monday, March 2, 2026. Members were also reminded that the meeting will feature U.S. Senate candidate John Shull, continuing the club’s commitment to hearing directly from candidates and encouraging thoughtful, issue-driven discussion. Republicans, unaffiliated voters, and independent thinkers are always welcome.
