Federal Broadband Approval Moves Delaware Forward—Finally
Delaware has just taken an important step forward and it’s one worth understanding in full.
The federal government under the Trump administration has approved Delaware’s plan to expand high-speed internet access to more than 4,700 unserved and underserved homes and businesses across our state. Backed by over $100 million in funding through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program, this effort is set to bring reliable connectivity to communities—especially in Sussex and Kent Counties—that have been left behind for far too long. Construction is expected to begin in Fall 2026.
High-speed internet is no longer optional. It’s how students learn, how patients access telehealth, how small businesses operate, and how families stay connected. In today’s world, lack of access doesn’t just inconvenience people, it limits opportunity.
Why This Happened and Why It Took Time
The broadband expansion we’re seeing today began as a bipartisan effort in 2021, when Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in the wake of COVID.

During the pandemic, something became undeniably clear: access to reliable internet was essential. Students were sent home to learn remotely, medical care shifted to telehealth, and businesses had to move online just to stay afloat. And yet, in many parts of Delaware, that access simply wasn’t there.
That reality drove both parties in Washington to act, creating the BEAD program to fund broadband expansion across the country.
But creating a program is one thing. Delivering results is another. Implementation under the Biden administration has been slow, with layers of bureaucracy delaying progress and leaving many communities waiting while funds sat in the pipeline.
BEAD Program Boosted Under Trump
Under the current Republican-led federal administration, there has been a renewed focus on execution, efficiency, and accountability. The emphasis is no longer just on allocating funds, but on actually getting projects moving. That shift is helping move states like Delaware from planning to action.
Delaware’s approved plan targets the areas that need it most, with thousands of new connections planned across all three counties, particularly in rural and underserved parts of Sussex County. The project also leverages significant private investment from providers like Verizon and Comcast, ensuring that public dollars are matched with real infrastructure buildout.
The goal is ambitious: full high-speed internet coverage across Delaware by 2029, making our state one of the first in the nation to achieve it.
Why This Is Good for Delaware
This is exactly the kind of investment Delaware needs.
It strengthens our economy by giving small businesses the tools to compete.
It supports education by ensuring students have access to digital resources.
It improves healthcare through expanded telehealth access.
And it makes our communities more connected, competitive, and resilient.
For Sussex County in particular, this helps close a long-standing gap between growth and infrastructure, something residents have felt for years.
Can Governor Meyer Accomplish What He Says He Will
Execution Will Determine Success. The plan itself is promising, particularly because it relies on private providers to do the actual buildout. But as with any large-scale government program, success will depend entirely on execution, and we have already seen that despite passing the BEAD program in 2021, the democrat Biden administration sat on it.
Delaware must ensure that funds are deployed efficiently, providers are selected transparently, and clear performance benchmarks are in place. Timelines must be met, costs controlled, and results delivered, not just promised.
This is an opportunity for Delaware to get it right. But it will require strong oversight, disciplined management, and a commitment to accountability every step of the way.
