Is Nuclear Right for Delaware? 38th Club Meeting Monday 10/6/2025

Like many families in Sussex County, I’ve watched our electric bills climb while hearing promises that offshore wind and solar would bring relief. But as David Stevenson of the Caesar Rodney Institute recently pointed out, PJM, the regional grid operator, has confirmed that state energy mandates, not PJM mismanagement, are the real drivers of rising costs and reliability risks.

The reality is that renewables underperform just when power is needed most. On July 16, one of the hottest days of the summer, solar across the PJM grid was generating only 10 percent of its capacity and wind just 37 percent. On Aug. 11, when a power plant near Baltimore went offline, wind was supplying only 7 percent. Despite decades of taxpayer-funded subsidies, wind and solar make up about 12 percent of PJM’s capacity and deliver far less in actual generation.

Meanwhile, dependable plants are being retired, including our own Indian River facility in Sussex County. After hundreds of millions in upgrades that made it one of the cleanest coal plants in the nation, it was still forced to close. At the same time, demand is growing from electric vehicles, data centers and a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing. As PJM executive vice president Aftab Khan put it, “We need realistic solutions, not politics, to take on energy challenges.”

Delawareans deserve honest answers. When solar and wind deliver only a fraction of their capacity during peak demand, it’s clear that “clean energy” mandates are not living up to the promises.

It’s time to reverse Delaware’s renewable mandate, leave offshore wind behind and protect our greatest assets — our coastline, our fishing industry and our precious wildlife, from right whales to dolphins to horseshoe crabs. Instead of doubling down on failure, Delaware should look to nuclear power as a true clean energy source that can make our state both prosperous and reliable. And we need leaders who understand this.
